« The Israel Psychoanalytical Society is speaking out against the attack on the liberal and democratic nature of Israel.

The current government seeks to change the fundamental values of our Declaration of Independence which determines that the State of Israel will “foster the development of the country for the benefit of all its inhabitants; it will be based on freedom, justice and peace as envisaged by the prophets of Israel; it will ensure complete equality of social and political rights to all its inhabitants irrespective of religion, race or sex; it will guarantee freedom of religion, conscience, language, education and culture.”

Psychoanalysis is committed to freeing the human spirit from oppression and struggle stemming from forces of splitting and discrimination. Divisiveness and polarization are a danger to the human mind, whereas unity, respect and the outreaching of a hand to others – all others – are the basis of healthy development.

As with the individual spirit, so with society. A society poisoned by hate and division, which discriminates against groups, which removes critical checks and balances, is a society that hands control over to dark forces and becomes a dangerous society.

The current government, in its short term so far, has already come out against women, Arabs, the LGBT community, foreign workers, human rights organizations, progressive streams of Judaism and secular people. Israel’s young democracy needs the resilience and determination of each and every one of us to protect it.

We call for the preservation of the liberal values of our democratic country which sanctify equal rights and the defense of human dignity and liberty.

We express our absolute opposition to oppression and discrimination against any person.

We commit to treating anyone who comes to us for help without discrimination by religion, race, gender identity or sexuality. »
